The role of a lifetime

Carroll Spiney is a 74 year old who feels like a big bird in a sea of little people. That's because he plays Big Bird on Sesame Street, a role he has had for nearly forty years. Spiney says that he lucked into the role back in the early seventies and he has enjoyed every minute of it.

Can you imagine being Big Bird? It isn't easy work. He gets up in the morning and dons this heavy costume and virtually walks around blind all day. He wears glasses that are attached to a monitor that let him see how he appears on camera and he gauges his movement by that.

Carroll has the role of a lifetime. It has defined who he is and he is happy about that. The truth is that we have that same calling. We aren't called to be Big Bird. But we are called to the role of a lifetime. We are to be imitators of Christ. You and I are called and sent out into the world to be the hands, the feet, the eyes and heart of our Lord. We are to bring his love and grace into the world.

I can't think of a better calling. Big Bird is pretty cool, but Jesus is even better. so go on out and enjoy it.
