Doing it for God

Once a year I put on my chauffeur's hat and become a volunteer for the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Pageant. For a few days at the end of June I become the Assistant Judge's chair and help make sure the Judges are taken care of. In other words, I become a gofor.

This afternoon I had to make sure that tickets were secured for family and friends. Then I ran out to get a menu from the restaurant where they will be having lunch tomorrow. These are simple jobs but they are so important to the overall success of the Pageant. Over the years I have come to realize that there are dozens of volunteers that put their egos aside to make this program possible. They cook lunches, serve as chaperons for the girls, choreograph dances, pick up guests from the airport, serve as MC's, stage hands, dress pressers and more.

Without these people stepping up to do some very simple, but menial jobs, the whole thing would fall down and the girls would love out on thousands of dollars of college scholarships. The same is true of God's plan to share the good news of God's love with the world. He needs us to step up and take on the simple jobs that will make everything come together. God needs us to practice acts of kindness and compassion, to work in soup kitchens, to volunteer in schools, to mentor kids, to visit the sick, and to take on small tasks in our churches.

When we put our ego aside and let Christ work through us, great things happen and he is crowned Lord of Lords for all to see. So don't be shy. Step up and volunteer to serve him in whatever way you can.

We all need to be willing to serve in the army of God.
